Youth Movement, The Investor Markets Getting Younger
Landon Capital News
Younger generations are entering capital markets earlier and changing the way they use them. Schwab’s surveyed investors reported average starting ages of 35 for boomers (roughly 62–80 today), 32 for Gen X (46–61), 25 for millennials (30–45) and 19 for adult Gen Z (18–29).
At Robinhood, millennials and younger generations accounted for 76% of funded customers at the end of 2025. The number of customers with funded accounts more than doubled from 12.5 million at the end of 2020 to 28.6 million by August 2026.
Traditional investments still anchor portfolios, although younger investors are building a different mix around them. FINRA found individual-stock ownership among 77–83% of surveyed non-retirement investors across its age groups. Mutual-fund ownership rose with age, from 47% of 18–34s to 55% of 35–54s and 64% of those 55 and over. In Schwab’s June 2026 poll, 55% of Gen Z clients planned to invest in ETFs over the next three months, 44% in individual stocks and 13% in fixed income. The sharper age differences appear in what younger investors are adding around that core.
FINRA found that 43% of investors aged 18–34 had traded financial options, compared with 24% of those aged 35–54 and 10% of those 55 and over. Used speculatively, these derivatives and event contracts offer different ways to trade an anticipated outcome. Robinhood’s contracts on Federal Reserve rate decisions bring prediction markets into the same digital brokerage account as shares and options. On prediction platform Polymarket, monthly notional trading volume rose from $1.3 billion in July 2025 to $12.9 billion in July 2026. Its largest website visitor age group is estimated to be 25–34.
FINRA’s findings on digital assets show a similar pattern to financial options trading: among investors familiar with digital currencies, half of the youngest group had invested, versus 36% and 10% in the older groups. For some, the attraction is a faster route to financial goals. Northwestern Mutual’s 2026 survey found that, among people using or considering speculative investments, 80% of Gen Z, 75% of millennials, 66% of Gen X and 51% of boomers felt financially behind and believed these investments offered a faster way to ‘catch up’.
Generational differences also extend to how investors trade in capital markets. FINRA found mobile-app trading among 80% of investors aged 18–34, against 61% aged 35–54 and 19% aged 55 and over; websites remained the most common route overall. Both bring research and trading together, while apps make it possible to trade from almost anywhere. Schwab found that 48% of millennial and Gen Z investors had used fractional shares (parts of a stock or ETF), compared with 25% of boomers.
Traditional fund managers are extending this digital access to the instruments themselves. BlackRock launched tokenised money-market products earlier in 2026, while Franklin Templeton’s OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund records share ownership on a public blockchain. BlackRock’s Larry Fink says tokenisation could make investments “easier to issue, easier to trade, and easier to access.”
AI agents add the prospect of automating more of the investment process and, over time, a greater share of trading activity. Robinhood said in September that more than 150,000 customers had opened accounts since May to connect their own AI agents to trading tools; its built-in agents were still “coming soon”. As millennials and Gen Z accumulate assets, tokenised instruments and AI agents could turn their familiarity with digital investing into greater activity across capital markets.
