This might cost you; Universal Health Services falls 3% on legal settlement
Landon Capital News
Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE: UHS) reported third-quarter earnings that slightly exceeded analyst expectations, but shares fell 3% in after-hours trading Tuesday as legal settlement costs and Medicaid payment uncertainties overshadowed the beat.
The hospital operator posted adjusted earnings per share of $5.22, topping the analyst consensus of $5.20 by $0.02. Revenue rose 5.3% YoY to $4.73 billion from $4.50 billion in the third quarter of 2025, beating the analyst estimate of $4.71 billion. The quarter included a net favorable pre-tax impact of $21 million from Medicaid supplemental payment programs, primarily in Washington, D.C. and California, offset by a $26 million charge to increase reserves for a tentative settlement agreement in the Cumberland Hospital litigation.
The company reached a tentative settlement in August 2026 to resolve claims related to Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents involving allegations of inappropriate conduct by a former medical director. While the settlement terms are confidential, the company stated a substantial portion is covered by commercial excess insurance with the remainder covered by existing reserves.
