Long lasting relationships, Qualcomm secures long-term Apple patent deal, easing revenue fears

Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) shares ticked up 0.2% today after the chipmaker announced a renewed global patent licensing agreement with Apple, taking effect April 1, 2027. The deal secures a critical, long-term revenue stream for Qualcomm, helping the stock pare earlier losses amid a broader Nasdaq 100 sell-off.

“We are pleased to extend the Apple license agreement,” said John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing. Beyond the immediate market reaction, the renewal provides investors with much-needed clarity on the continuation of one of the tech sector’s most lucrative—and historically turbulent—commercial partnerships.

The relationship between Apple and Qualcomm is one of the most complex in Silicon Valley, defined by fierce legal warfare and a race for hardware independence. Resenting Qualcomm’s lucrative smartphone royalty model, Apple sued the chipmaker in 2017 over “excessive royalties,” sparking a bitter two-year global legal battle that abruptly ended with a 2019 settlement and the foundation of their current licensing pact.
