All working together, Lockheed Martin demos drone detection system using 5G and AI

Lockheed Martin (LMT), Verizon (VZ), Keysight Technologies (KEYS), ODC and Astris AI conducted a live demonstration of the NetSense Airspace Awareness-as-a-Service system in the Miami area in July, according to a press release from Lockheed Martin.

The system uses existing Verizon 5G network spectrum, ODC’s AI-native Radio Access Network software, Nvidia’s AI Aerial platform and Keysight’s radio frequency simulation tools to detect, track and monitor unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). During the demonstration, the system identified drones and maintained track custody through their flights without modifying existing cellular radio deployments.

The NetSense system analyzes radio frequency signal disturbances using AI to predict and track UAS flight paths and send real-time alerts. Lockheed Martin describes the system as compatible with future 6G Integrated Sensing and Communications technology, with a roadmap toward broader network deployment.
