OpenAI is developing new features to counter rival personal AI agent offerings from Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:SPCX) and Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) as competition intensifies in the market for automated workplace tools, according to a report from The Information. The move reflects growing pressure on the ChatGPT creator to defend its market leadership against nimble competitors capable of handling complex, multi-step digital workflows.

The San Francisco-based startup is currently working on features aimed directly at SpaceX’s recently launched Grok Bot, an always-on digital teammate designed to manage software applications, handle routine background tasks, and collaborate with workers, according to a person with knowledge of the effort cited by The Information. Simultaneously, OpenAI leadership has discussed launching a dedicated personal AI assistant to counter Meta’s newly introduced Muse product, another source familiar with the matter revealed.

Rather than building entirely new systems from scratch, OpenAI is expected to repurpose and rebrand existing agentic capabilities embedded within its ChatGPT and Codex platforms. Recent model iterations, beginning with GPT-5 last year, were engineered to execute longer-horizon tasks across integrated third-party applications like email and calendars, though consumer awareness of these advanced capabilities remains relatively low.
